In early September, Reuters reported that banks had pledged a larger amount of higher-risk collateral to the Bank of England for six-month funding. The report said the amount pledged in one weekly auction was the highest since March 2020.

Collateral is meant to reduce risk for the cash lender. If the borrower cannot pay back the cash, the lender has an asset it can use to recover value. This works best when the asset is simple, liquid, and easy to price.
