In 2026, U.S. household debt stayed high, and auto loan balances remained a large part of the consumer credit system. New York Fed data showed auto loan balances rose in the first quarter, while broad early delinquency trends were fairly steady.
At the same time, the deeper risk inside auto lending did not vanish. Higher borrowing costs, expensive vehicles, and stretched household budgets kept pressure on some borrowers.
This matters because auto loans are not held only by banks. Many loans are also pooled into securities and sold to investors. That means borrower stress can move into a wider market. The car may sit in one driveway, but the loan can sit inside a larger credit stack.

An auto loan depends on three basic things. The borrower must have enough income, the payment must be affordable, and the car must have enough value if the borrower stops paying.
When those parts work, the loan can perform well. When one part weakens, the whole setup becomes harder to manage. The problem is that cars tend to lose value as they age. A borrower may owe more than the car is worth, especially early in the loan.
That creates pressure if the borrower misses payments. The lender may recover the car, but selling it may not cover the full loan. This is the core risk. The debt can last longer than the value cushion behind it.
